Guide to Kamikochi
 Location
Kamikochi is in the Chubusangaku National Park that includes the entire North Japan Alps. Kamikochi is a small and slender basin at 1,500 meters (4,500 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by high mountains such as Hodaka Mountains, Mt. Yakedake and Mt. Kasumizawa. The view from there of Hodaka Mountains and Azusa River is one of the most beautiful mountain scenes in Japan. (See the picture of top page)

 History
Over 300 million years ago, Kamikochi area was believed to have been a seabed. Intensive movements of the earth and river erosion formed today's Kamikochi.

Kamikochi has many species of animals and plants that have adapted themselves over the years to the climate and geology of the area. There is a complicated interaction between them and they live in harmony with each other. From large animals to bacteria, they are connected through food and air.

While strict laws that regulate the National Park system in Japan preserve Kamikochi and its environs, human activities have had impact on it. It is possible to observe man-made or man-changed "nature".

When you visit Kamikochi, what will you feel? Someone may think about the eternal geological history of the area, while another might be impressed with the lush unique vegetation of the area. And some may be concerned with the ecological changes taking place. As a visitor to Kamikochi, remember your responsibility. Obey the regulations designed to protect this beautiful area.
